Importing Unapproved or Unavailable Life-Saving Medicine into Eritrea

According to Proclamation No. 90/1996: Proclamation to Provide for the Control of Drugs, Medical Supplies, Medical Equipment and Establishments (1996) within Eritrea, importing unapproved or unavailable life-saving medicine for personal use is not prohibited, but there are legal conditions that must be met to ensure compliance with national regulations.

Conditions for Importing Medicine

To import life-saving medicine that is unapproved or unavailable in Eritrea, individuals must obtain prior authorization from the Ministry of Health or relevant authorities. This authorization process is designed to ensure the safety and efficacy of the medicines being imported.

Application Procedure

Applicants need to provide comprehensive documentation, which includes:

  • A formal medical prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.
  • A physician's letter stating the necessity of the medicine for the patient's survival.
  • Legal permits for the transportation of the medicine.
  • Detailed information about the medicine, including its type and intended use.

This authorization may take some time to process, so it is advised to apply well in advance to avoid delays that could impact the patient's health.

Customs Declaration Process

Upon arrival in Eritrea, the imported medicine must be declared at customs. Presenting the obtained authorization documents is crucial to comply with legal requirements and to prevent any potential legal issues such as confiscation or penalties.

Limitations and Conditions

The quantity of medicine allowed is strictly for personal use and not for distribution or sale. Importing large quantities may raise legal concerns and is generally prohibited under Proclamation No. 90/1996.
